Anerley Primary, Bromley

Janet McAleer - 1961

Mr Skellet - Headmaster. I always remember the pupils waiting outside his office for the slipper or cane - did it do anybody any harm?

Janette Child - 1965

Mr Jenkinson - He was one of my best teachers. Also wrote with an ink pen and had the best hand writing. He had 6 plimsoles on the radiator. What ever day it was, and you had been naughty you would get the slipper. Friday was the worst, the sole was coming off.

Alfred Pritchard, London

Brenda Herbert - 1962

Mr Holtz - He always wore a black 3 piece suit and carried a cane or ruler, I know through bitter experience.

Alwyn Primary, Maidenhead

Patricia Shaw - 1948

Sports days - I remember sports days when it never rained and the grass patch seemed endlessly long when your little legs got so tired running. The 'shed' as we called it had the same cobwebs in 1948! Unlike my daughter I have no memories of playing kiss and knickerchase, but I do remember Miss Pickering caning the back of my legs for talking. We could do with a few of her these days.

Baden Powell & St Peter`s CofE VC Primary, Poole

Sarah Jewell - 1982

Mr Watts - Bend Over, Touch Your Toes,......WHACK!....

Belmont Junior, London

Gail Evans - 1965

Mr Maguire - I remember this man very well. Small, fit and always immaculate. The 'daily ten' each morning would reduce me to a gibbering wreck and how well I remember the ritual taking off of the glasses, polishing them, and replacing them to check that it was really me holding up my hand on the rare occasions that I managed to get more than 4 or 5 correct. He also used to chalk up a ping pong bat, put you over his knee and wallop your backside.

Biggin Hill, Bromley

Zoe Humphries - 1982

Mr Thomas - Two words.................."The Slipper"

Brettenham Primary School

Angela Wicker - 1967

Ms Best - I remember getting the cane from Ms Best for mucking about in the dinner line with Sharon Rice - we were barking like dogs - trust us.

Courthouse Primary, Maidenhead

Yvonne Icke - 1976

Does anyone else remember getting the slipper when you were naughty? I once got a football boot by mistake, ouch! Had a lovely pattern on my bum!

Chesterfield Junior School

Linda Nicol - 1973

Miss Squires - Miss Squires was always shouting at me and asking why I was not more like Julie Frith. I'll never forget the day she gave me the slipper, (OUCH).

Crofton Junior, Bromley

Pamela Ranson - 1951

Mrs Challis - WOW! I remember HER! Bit free with the corporal punishment, wasn't she?

Crosshouse Primary School, Crosshouse, Scotland

Mary Brown - 1976

The Belt - I remember getting the belt every single day for a year from Mrs Shields for getting one or more answers wrong in Mental Arithmetic. It never made me any better with numbers !!

Left: Mary Brown got the belt "Every single day for a year" at school.

Cleadon Park Primary School, South Shields, England

Avril Telfer - 1956

Mr Sigsworth - Very mean and very handy with the cane - he got me twice. I would love to meet up with him again!!!!!

Anna Hogg - 1961

Mr Ellis - Yes, Alister I remember the bamboo cane in Mr Ellis' class very well - I was fortunate in as much as I could spell very well and never got below 9/10. However, I wasn't too hot on the old "verbal reasoning" and "mental arithmetic" which was drummed into us for our 10+. My claim to fame was that I was the first girl in the Junior School to be sent outside for the cane for talking too much (I think it was Mrs Craven's class at the time).

Left: Anna Hogg was caned at school.

Duncombe Primary, London

Caroline Thompson - 1966

Various - I remember a Mr Jones and being caned by him for not getting my italic letters right.

Ecclesbourne Primary, London

Wendy Vandersteen - 1963

Mrs O'Hair - The most frightening teacher in the school, no one dare look at her wrong, Once caned me for talking in line for which I was not guilty!

Eastbrook Primary, Essex

Carole Jones - 1974

Mr Potter - Our very strict physics teacher with curly, ginger hair. Put up with my inability to grasp most of the basics and (I've heard) was astounded when I passed my GCE! Used to take the kids sent for punishment into the prep room for the slipper and put up with our pleas of 'don't do it sir' but still did!

Eunice Taylor - 1975

Fairs - Does anyone remember Mr Fairs and his large range of PE slippers for those who had misbehaved? He had them in size order.

Flushing CofE Primary, Cornwall

Liza Eggleton - 1975

Mrs Cane - I can just remember being absolutely terrified of her - washing mouths out with soap and using that cane!

Galleywod CofE Primary, Essex

Tina Lauder - 1966

Mr Sprang - Loved shouting at all the kids and walking round with his cane in his hand.

Glebe County Junior, Essex

Linda Egan - 1969

Miss Standing - The Headmistress, Miss Standing was a fearsome woman. She once bent me over the desk in her office and spanked me for forgetting to hand in my dinner money (one shilling!). I was very shocked and humiliated but pretended not to care, although I did care very much and I can remember the incident clearly even though it must have happened over 35 years ago.

Ivy Chimneys County Primary, Essex

Elizabeth Wood - 1963

Mrs Leverett - She gave me the ruler for dropping nigel turner`s cap on the floor.

Launcelot Primary, Bromley

Sue Barrell - 1967

Mrs Lass - Does anyone remember Mrs. Lass? I remember her as looking a little bit like Hilda Baker. I received a caning from her once for misbehaving.

Leesons Primary, Bromley

Heather Dixon - 1966

I guess looking back that there was a lot of corporal punishment at that school - maybe all schools were like that then?

Mylor Bridge Primary, Cornwall

Brenda George - 1951

Miss Eva had long nails which left marks on your arm. A look from Miss Jones did the trick. Mr. Hearle's long legs covered the ground quickly for a clip around the ear and Mr. Pyper was the ultimate threat with the cane.
If only schools and teachers were like that now! Thank you Mylor Bridge.

Milton Street JNR, Lancashire

Maria Taylor - 1939

Forgotten Teachers - Surely there's someone out ther who remembers the two Miss Harrisons (sisters); one, the Head, had black hair scraped into a bun, and the other had a cloud of ginger hair. I remember the latter particularly because she administered my first taste of corporal punishment. Slapped on the backs of my legs with a ruler. It was all good for the soul though, AND we didn't got home crying to our parents!!

(SF&R NOTE) Milton Street School was attended in the 1970`s by the boxer, former British & World Champion Jane Couch, who was herself spanked by the headmaster at the school.

Nelson Primary, London

Lynette Jago - 1969

Miss Glenn - Very scary teacher, slipper beatings a speciality.

Deborah Carr - 1970

Miss Glenn - I remember many a slap with the slipper for speaking on the stairs.

Susan Macdonald - 1973

Miss Glenn - I'm sure most people of my era would remember Miss Glenn the Deputy Head teacher who used to slipper a line of children every morning. She was a very scary woman!

Novers Lane Junior School, Knowle West, England

Julie Harris - 1976

Mr Griffin - He used to shout and shake when he got angry, his cheeks would go bright red. He gave me the dap (slipper) once in the changing room.... for spelling something right lol.

Cathy O'Rourke - 1964

Mr Lord - My old Head Teacher - I really enjoyed Netherton Moss - despite getting the slipper for talking in class!

School meals - I can remember putting fish pie and semolina pudding into the pocket of my school gymslip because I was always getting the cane for not eating my very expensive lunch (Miss Twomey was always reminding me how much my parents had to pay). Come to think of it I seemed to get the cane for a lot of trivial things!!

Valerie Webster Picture

St James' CofE Junior School, Derby, England

Perminder Dhillon - 1986

Mrs Bond - Does Anyone remember Mrs Bond! I certainly woud find it hard to forget her!(and her slipper!) My bottom and Mrs Bond`s slipper met after an incident where I accidentally cut off one of a little girls plaits!(I can`t remember her name, but I guess she may remember mine!) Well, she should not have leant into my sciccors!
