Arbroath High School, Arbroath, Scotland

Audrey McKenzie - 1982

Mr Malone (Maths) - He used to say to me 'make love not war', right before he gave me the belt for talking. If I was lucky he would send me out where with the hall acoustics, I would while away the lesson singing!

Lileen Cairns - 1973

Miss Brunton - Yes, I remember Miss Brunton, well!!! Got 6 of the belt for smoking in the tunnel and I was only holding the fag for Avril Couper!!!!!! Mrs Mac caught me and took me to her. They used to look at your face to see if you were going to cry, didn't they!

Vivienne Savage - 1960

Miss Platt and Miss Percival - How could you ever mention one without the other! Thank you Lynne Stacey for your comments - made me laugh out loud as I was one of the group that was strapped or at least a comparable group in a similar situation. I can now admit though that Miss Platt ran out of steam half way through and went to find Miss Percival to bring her back to help. I would have been the first in line for renewed vigour but she got it wrong and started behind me so I totally missed out. My classmates never told on me - how's that for old-fashioned friendship.

Lynne Stacey - 1963

Miss Platt & Miss Percival - Miss Platt, with her famous leather strap and "Punishment Book". She strapped our entire 1st year class for talking while she was out of the room. Miss Percival - if you couldn't draw a dead worm and make it look like a Van Gogh (she taught art & biology) you were of absolutely no use to mankind and were publicly humiliated accordingly. Lefties trying to make it in a right handed world didn't stand a chance.

Pamela Lyon - 1962

Miss Fugle and Miss Goodship - Joan, I remember Miss Goodship very well. She was a sweet, very patient needlework teacher (she had to be with the state of my needlework). I was another victim of Miss Fugle too. She caught me raiding the supply cupboard and eating the sultanas. Needless to say, I got the slipper. I was not the little miss goody two shoes she thought I was.

Margaret Stevens - 1961

Miss Watters - Oh yes, Do I remember her! My one and only time being caned! I turned around in class and Mr. Suttle accused me of talking. I was sent to Miss Watters to be punished. It hurt my pride more than my hand! We also went on a trip to London with Miss Watters. We stayed in a hotel. During the night our room was very noisy, lots of laughing and giggling. Next morning I had to go around the hotel and apologise to all the other guests for the noise I HAD CAUSED! Miss Watters said she knew it was me because she would know my laugh anywhere - NOT SO I WAS ASLEEP! But I have never forgotton having to apologise to all those people. If she ever reads this I would like her to know it was NOT ME!

Margaret Stevens Picture

Gillian Lindsay - 1977

Mr Mcarthur - I well remember biffo. he was the only teacher that I ever got the belt from!!!

Mr McDonald (Lurch) - How could I ever forget. It was three strikes and your out. I failed three science tests in a row and the punishment was six of the best. I was terrified. I stood in line, the only girl, waiting as each boy was whacked. Finally almost fainting, it was my turn. "I um, don't um, believe in ,um, corporal punishment ,um, for girls" said Lurch.

(SF&R Comment) Not entirely clear if Linda Barr did get the belt or not. Mr McDonald did use the belt on girls according to other Friends Reunited references.

I note the uniform changed not long after to a skirt. I rest my case. She also used to pull me from lessons and send me to collect the "naughty" girls for the cane. Thanks for making me so many enemies.

Kirsten Heerwagen - 1980

Mr Davies - The best headmaster ever - firm but fair. If you were made to clean the fish tank in Mr Eason's lab you knew you where in trouble - Mr Davies kept his canes there to keep them supple. A wonderful teacher and lovely man. My love of English is in great part due to his infectious enthusiasm. He never patronized us and I remember putting on some scenes from Midsummer Night's Dream in the little copse behind the 'huts'. It was not abridged or dumbed down for 8 year olds! He did use the slipper when pushed but was like the Pied Piper on the way home with kids fighting to carry his briefcase and hanging off his coat tails!

Bernice Dunnett - 1948

The Mat
Reading the board I am amazed that the mat was still there in the 1960s. I was sent there for the ruler when Mr H S Moss was the head, I had pinched Brian Samuels for bouncing up and down on our joint bench and spoiling my handwriting. I thought that it was very unfair that I should get punished just because he screamed in pain!

Maria Christopher - 1968

The Mat
The dreaded MAT! Myself and Ann Huck had to spend a terrifying time standing on the MAT for walking around the playground saying "***" to anyone who would listen. I was only about 9 or 10 and didn't have a clue as to the meaning of the word "***"! I thought my world had ended! Oh to be so innocent again...

Anna Ré - 1978

MR BIRKHEAD
Can't believe the world is full of do-gooders who have abolished corporal punishment (even mild, Mr Birkhead style, slipper smacking corporal punishment). You only need to read these messages about him to see that he was loved and respected - at the time and now in our reminiscences.

Button Lane, Manchester

Donna Harvey - 1975

Flixton, Manchester

Anne Tennant - 1985

Mr Seddon / Mr Smith
Remember those long cross country runs in the depth of winter dressed only in t shirt and knickers, the end of the run was the two oak trees on flixton fields, they always seemed such a long way away. Mr Seddon still visits the Isle of Man, I remember hiding John Gregory under the bed in our room.
Mr Smith, fantastic teacher, we played rounders every day ( almost). I remember he sent Steven Wright to ask Miss Gator for the bubble out of a spirit level, we heard her shouting across the hall.
Happy days.....lining up in the hall at dinner if you were naughty, waiting for Mr Seddon and his slipper/ruler, despite that he was a great headmaster.

Angela Coller - 1961

Miss Wolfenden
Miss Wolfenden was evil. She rapped me on the knuckles with a ruler and made me stand outside the classroom door and sent me to the Head (Mr Evans) - all for giggling in class - how unfair.

Mrs Allen
I had Mrs Allen in years two and four and used to getted smacked, I think every day. I too remember the hand writing exercises and also having hand, hair, knees and other inspections on a regular basis and if we were not groomed to her satisfaction, we would be smacked. I can only think I must have been a very dirty child!
That aside she was a very good teacher who instilled good habits, manners and handwriting skills in us. I must admit though, I wouldn't like to come across her again now, as I'm sure I'd still be frightened to death of her!

Lower Kersal, Manchester

Marilyn Hough - 1961

Mr. Donnelly
I can remember Mr. Donnelly well, both myself and Janice (Bromley) had an enormous crush on him. We both put how much we loved him in our desks. I also remember Mr. Martin, Miss Boardman and Mr. Rogerson who was always hitting the backs of my legs as I use to bite my nails. As for (Pop) Gale, well I got the ruler most days, but I loved my time at Lower Kersal.

Jean High - 1947

Mr.Gale
A headmaster never to be forgotten - he could appear from nowhere and deliver a lightening strike to the back of the legs with his ruler if you were running along the veranda. I soon learnt to walk, at least past his office. Happy days---------

Vivianne Irvine on 02/02/2002 17:04    year: 1964

Mr Gale
Headmaster nickname 'Pop' Gale.
Strict - wasn't frightened to use the ruler or cane. Funny - liked to share jokes even the awful ones. Fair - he hated boys or girls to fight, especially if they wore glasses, but the treatment was the same for both sexes.

I never made it into Mr Helsby's class because my family moved and I had to do my last year in a new school. I was distraught at leaving, as Mr Helsby's reputation preceeded him. Everybody wanted to be in his class, even with the slipper on the desk! A lovely gentleman!

Martina Greene

Torture by Strap
Me - I must have been on the receiving end of that damned strap at least once a term.
The specific memory from which these words have returned to haunt me? It was the time I yanked my outstretched palm out of the strap's firing line at the very last moment (a reflex response over which I had no control - honest!), resulting in the aforementioned goodly Sister giving her own right thigh a sound thrashing!

St Peter's RC, Manchester

Valerie Mainwaring - 1958

Mr Dolan
Mr Dolan gave us mental arithmetic tests every Monday morning and every Friday morning. If you got one wrong he would hit you with a ruler or the strap. Everyone was terrified and so couldn't do the maths so we all got strapped every Monday and every Friday. Funny though I'm brilliant at maths now. Thanks Mr Dolan!!

We used to call him 'Sputnik' because we thought he was Russian. He used to smack my legs hard for running in the corridor which used to swell and bruise. What with My Dolan and Mr Svelan it is any wonder I lived at all.
