South Grove, Rotherham
Bettina Webber - 1978
Mr Weatherall - I loved
this teacher - he was really strict and we were seated according
to ability with the best sitting at the back near the window then
the next brightest in front. I have a photo of our class in
his classroom - he was quite handy with the slipper on the boys
but only tapped the girls with it - but woe betide you if you
hadn't done your homework!! Your stomach churned outside his
room if there was a test that day.
Southbourne, Hillingdon,
London
Marie Pomeroy - 1980
Steve Grehan - Was my form tutor
from 2nd to 5th year. He used to teach p.e. and tech drawing.
What a great bloke. Also was a dab hand with percy the slipper.
St Thomas More, Haringey, N.London
Anne Searson - 1959
Mr Rudden - I remember him very well. He lived in my
town, Palmers Green, and had moved from the Lake District. His
son, James, also attended for 1 year (retaking his 11+).
His deputy was Mrs Higgins, very nifty with a black plimsoll on
occasion!
St Gilda`s RC, Haringey, N.London
Gillian Lewis - 1969
Miss Andrews - I remember I upset her once, I got a terrible
smacking off her too (outside the classroom)!
St Mary`s, Haringey, N.London
Avril Humphreys - 1964
Mrs Lewis - 4th year form teacher and English teacher.
Seemed quite old. Always stood with her arms folded akimbo across
her chest. I was caned by her for stealing the donger out of the
school bell on the last day of leaving. It couldn't be found as I
put it down an outside drain. Happy days?
St Peter's High,
Doncaster
Anne Hanley - 1963
Remember the uniform?
remember the special buses? all lined up to take us back to Town.
I was perhaps the most badly behaved girl ever with Josie Tighe
and Julie Holmes. Remember Hckling, Lewis Glock, Webster,
Harrison, all wonderful strict teachers. All very capapable of
dishing out strap, cane, lines, etc.
Joanne McKevitt - 1982
Mr Battey - Does anyone
remeber him? He had a slipper he called Sabastian. He wasn`t
affraid to use it on anyone.
St Theresa's RC School,
London
Pauline Chapman - 1957
Sr
Dolorus - I was one of the original students in the school when
it first opened. A classmate and myself have the distinction of
being the first two girls to get the cane from the headmistress
Sr Dolorus. The first occasion was for sitting on the playground
when there was a "R" in the month(too cold). The second
time it was for being in the school building during lunch time
(forbidden), though I actually had permission. I can remember
going to the cloakroom and running cold water over my hands to
cool them off. I also remember if you laughed while another girl
was being caned she added another stroke to your original six.
How things have changed!! Does anyone else remember Sr Dolorus
from those days?
Ann Churchill - 1963
Sr Mary Paul - Came as
a "relief" teacher or so we were led to believe. At
that time my friends and I were naughty girls who loved to
"play up" a new teacher. Did we ever get a shock when
we found out that the "new teacher" we tried to take
advantage of was in fact the new Headmistress...she never forgave
or forgot hahahahahah. if ever we were sent to Sr Mary Paul for
misbehaviour she would just look at us a certain way as if to say
"well I remember you...." and then it was "put out
your hand" and we got the cane.....

Deirdre Costelloe -
1971
Building the new school
- Does anyone remember when they started to build the 'new'
school and they tore down the huge tree in the yard. I got in
terrible trouble for climbing on it. I was sent to Sr Mary Paul's
office and she actually caned me. I was a first year and
terrified but managed to survive.
*Miss
Shine - I remember her coming up behind me while I was talking in
line. She lifted my skirt and smacked the top of my thight really
hard. Left a hand print. She was small and very strict.
Tania O'Gara - 1978
Sister Mary - Does
anyone remember her? Short fat nun, used to whip you with
plimsolls found in lockers. Always shouting! Terrified me.
St Michael`s, Dundee Scotland
Helen Silvester - 1960
Teachers - I can
remember the taste of the tablet, I remember Mrs Fitzpatrick with
the strap, she was very strict.
St Modan's High, Stirling
Scotland
Anne Boyle - 1980
Various - Mrs McGee
- wonderfully self-motivated 4ft tall English teacher who could
tame even the tallest miscreant with her belt.
St Columbanus, N.
Ireland
Jean Delaney - 1973
School Strike - I
think I remember the majority of the school having a very short
strike one lunchtime and locking ourselves in the new tennis
courts, all because the school finishing time changed from 3.50pm
to 4pm. It affected us kids who travelled to Donaghadee and had
to walk to the bottom of Ballymaconnell Road to get the bus home.
Seemed very serious at the time. We had a laugh although I ended
up at Mr McWilliams office with the cane being the end result.
For some reason he thought I was one of the instigators.
Stanely Green High, Paisley
Scotland
Isabella Stewart - 1965
Miss Dick - The
only time I ever got the belt was from Miss Dick. Three of us
never returned to school one sunny afternoon. It was pretty
obvious we had 'dogged it'. We had all gone up the braes for
lunch and it was so nice we decided no to go back. Of course I
got the blame for having the idea but we all got the belt. We
probably deserved it.
Sharmans Cross, Solihull
Debra Arkwell - 1968
Bains - Remember how he used to
bend you over his desk and make you face the class and humiliate
you. If you heard the keys rattle you knew you were about to get
whacked!
South Chadderton, Oldham
Pamela Collier - 1978
Mrs Bennell - She was the domestic
Science teacher, and one day she strapped me for throwing
someone`s sponge cake across the room to my friend Lynne who
dropped it.
Sherrly Ellis - 1980
Mr Borlam - The history teacher
used the "pump" system. Would put your over the desk
and ask "is there any reason I cannot pump you today"
Then he promptly whacked the trainer against your bottom. He was
a great teacher, and I gave him a lot of abuse. He deserved a
medal!!
Mrs Sherlock - Does anyone remember
this typing teacher. She used to jump off the chair to give us
the strap!
Ruth Young - 1981
Maths - Mr Bonnebaigt....never had
any control of his classes, it was brill. One time he told us all
to shut up & Pele put a drawing pin on my chair. I went ouch
& he sent me to Turner for 6 of the best. Thanks Mr
Bonnebaigt!
Shiney Row, Sunderland
Joy Scoble - 1972
Mr Gaffney - He certainly didn`t
stay in his office the day he caned Karen and I in the middle of
exams for the 6th form, caught me right on my finger tips - I
did'nt half yell. Thats what smoking round the corner got me.
Does anyone else remember smokers corner?
Silverthorne Girls, Woolworth
Jane Arnold - 1970
Mr Goodman - Oh Mr Goodman - he was
that good looking pottery teacher! Then he got me the cane for
disrupting his class - one open evening held at Peckham Girls
school - I saw his wife and realised that teachers did get
married and my illusion was shattered! Ah well - end of crush.
St Egbert`s College, Chingford
Natalie Wells - 1965
Mr Dineen - The only thing I can
remember from Mr Dineen's science class was the nylon rod he used
to demonstrate static electricity. He kept it in his jacket
breast pocket and whipped it out straight over your palm. Boy!
did it sting!
St Anselm`s RC, Oldham
Anne Fallon - 1965
Miss Ryan - Anyone remember miss
ryan? she was nice, but loved that strap. 2 mins late in line and
you got it.
Ann Fraser - 1969
Mr Tierney didnīt strap girls?? -
Just read the notice about Mr. Tierney not strapping girls?? Well
he certainly strapped me, every Friday regular as clockwork as
Iīd never done my french homework! Usually me and Denise
Schofield together up at the front.
Carol Ash - 1985
Mrs Healy was Headmistress (scarey
woman and wicked with the strap) She sent me all the way home to
Shaw one day because the split in my skirt was too high, took me
a 3hr journey to get there and back!!!! Mr Abbot kept his cane
down the inside seam of his cloak or so we thought!
Sturton-by-Stowe, Lincolnshire
Rose Kirby - 1964
George Hinchcliffe - He was my Form
teacher in the first year at Sturton. He was a good teacher but I
bet everyone remembers that slipper he had in his pocket if you
didn't behave.
Saltburn and Marske, Cleveland
Allyson Raby - 1972
Mrs Moore - She was the one and
only teacher to give me the cane, for chewing gum. I remember her
perfume, assorted, I think. Strong memories, however.
Sconce Hill, Newark
Janet White - 1971
Miss Wales - Deputy Headmistress -
A lethal woman with the leather strap..... argh it hurt when you
got it. Had a dose of it once and that was enough. I must admit
it sure put discipline in us (not a bad thing really) But all in
all she was a nice person, very easy to talk to and willing to
listen to our point of view.
St Margaret`s Girls, Kent
Barbara Thomas - 1964
Getting the slipper by Dudley
Hassan on bare flesh.
St Thomas Aquinas, Sunderland

Aquinas who used to cane everyone who was late even if the bus
never showed up. We were told we should have been on the earlier
bus then we wouldn't be late.
Arleen Hunter - 1966
Glad to see Sr. Clare kept up the
appearance of being stern. I remember the caning for being late
and since I came from Pallion for Forms 4 and 5, requiring 2
buses, this was not a rarety.
Trish Lynn - 1973
Does anyone remember the French
teacher who could cane you across the bone at the base of your
thumb? Did that hurt or what?

off her plants in class - We were caned and told to pay for the
plants.

hall?

jam jar of water.
Vivien Blenkinsop - 1969
Mr Murray - Geography Teacher -
Occupied the room opposite to Mr. Borwells. Left the teaching
profession to become a long distance lorry driver. Had a great
crush on him. Loved Geography but not my best subject. Also had
quite a love/hate relationship with this teacher.
North/East/South or West was his favourite saying. We never knew
which way our backside was going to be pointing for the slipper,
and since I was not good at Geography, so it was never facing the
right way. That was usually facing the class.
South Croydon Secondary, London
Katherine Reeve - 1969
Mrs Hibbett - Indeed something
else! Watch out for the ruler across the knuckles if you were in
her bad books. Also pulling needlework out with her long
fingernails if work found to be wrong.
Stanney County High, Chesire
Debbie Tucker - 1976
Cyril Evans - Head of Lower School
- strict, usually the teacher who gave the Slipper to those who
misbehaved.
Sandra Green - 1977
Cyril Evans - Took great delight in
spanking me with a gym shoe in the middle of the school entrance
hall for some misdemeanour or other.
Sturry, Canterbury
Jane Holness - 1971
Mr Davis - Headmaster. A very firm
but fair man. Well respected and liked most of the time. The day
I had the cane for smoking on the school bus I didn`t feel quite
the same about him!
Spurley Hey High, Manchester
Amanda Turner - 1974
Lower School - I was in keller
house and hated sport, that pe teacher was a real hard man, got
the pump for forgeting my kit, wow it hurt. Remember the crazy
wood work teacher who would launch anything he had in his hand if
he caught you talking, he was in the new modern building and
there was a lovely geog teacher on top floor. The lads always
tried to see up her very short skirts as she went up, he he.
South Manchester High, Manchester
Joanna Armstrong - 1984
Mrs Lunt - Remember getting the
strap with a few others for egging Sharon Bent and recking her
uniform, she didn`t just belt you with it she RAN and did it.
Southbourne, Hillingdon
Sara Mildenhall - 1978
John Stibbs - Thought himself grand. We all thought
otherwise. He loved using the cane and flew around assemblies in
his Graduation Gown.
St Joseph`s, Halton
Marie Percival - 1981
Gerrard - I remember the fear that
the Deputy would instill in everyone as he was keen on strapping
everyone! Not sure how he coped after corporal punishment was
banned, but I do know that he is now a Monk.
St Gregory`s RC High, Manchester
Angela Bibby - 1979
Sister Patrick - She became
Headmistress and was a dab hand with the strap, luckily not
across my hands or legs.
St George`s High, Blackpool
Jane Reddyhough - 1967
Mrs Siadek and Mr Knight - Does
anyone remember the time that we got to watch a very informative
television program in Miss Seddon`s room (schools programme I
believe). It was play time after the programme and we all stayed
in because it was wet. One bright spark, and I dont know who it
was, decided to watch Bill and Ben the flowerpot men with little
WEED! Mrs Siadek came into the room with her cane and put two
boys (I dont know who they were) over the desks and caned them on
the bum. I was horrified But more horrified to learn I was next
in her office. The art of being caned was to drop your hand when
the cane hit. Mrs Siadek had different ideas and held your hand
underneath. Oh how I wished I had had the courage to whip my hand
away. I can still feel it now. Many years later I met her and she
was a really nice lady. The kids of today need someone like her.
St Wilfred`s, Rochdale
Suzanne Bene-Doszpoly - 1980
Mr Hill - The best teacher ever! Do
you remember how popular M&S trainers where? I could never
afford any. Mr Hill gave me M&S trainers though! six of the
best in the storeroom, still love him. I have bumped into him
recently at a restaurant, he was with Mrs Shore the home
economics teacher, he looks exactly the same, dressed impeccably,
he recognised me immediately.
Deborah Ward - 1981
Mr Hill & Mr McGill - Lessons
with Trilly were certainly different. He used to DEMAND someone's
pump from their foot to use on one's backside or palm of the
hand! (Ouch!) He would then give you "six of the best"
(if you were lucky). He has been known to physically wrench some
poor kid's pump from their foot when they refused to offer it
voluntarily. I remember when Heather Paul sat on her hands and
refused point blank to suffer the agony of his punishments! Mr.
McGill's methods of punishment were also memorable. The whole
class used to have to line up and he would then whack each one on
the bottom! It was hard to pass him by without getting a whiff of
the night before's alcohol intake!! I haven't seen him in the
wine lodge for years but friends have spotted him in other public
houses!
St Thomas Aquinas, Sunderland
Rose James - 1965
Sister Claire - Does anyone
remember Sister Claire headmistress of the lower St.Thomas
Aquinas who used to cane everyone who was late even if the bus
never showed up? We were told we should have been on the earlier
bus then we wouldn't be late.
Arleen Hunter - 1966
Many - Glad to see Sr. Clare kept
up the appearance of being stern. I remember the caning for being
late and since I came from Pallion for Forms 4 and 5, requiring 2
buses, this was not a rarety.
Pauline Smith - 1972
Maureen Power - She was one who
knew how to use the cane too, but took a fair while to catch on
to the fact that you shouldn't stand under the strip light
suspended from the ceiling when you take a swing.
Christine McLaughlin - 1976
Everyone`s a Bully - Even though I
was only at the school two years, one memory was at least fifteen
of us lined up to be caned, and why? been seen near a place where
a lad had been bullied, we had to laugh, he remembered nearly
everyone that was near, but not one of the culprits. Always
remember it was a dinner time so it was take the cane or do
without dinner, sorry but had to have me dinner..hands out!
St Thomas More RC, Manchester
Janice Kinsella - 1977
Mrs Kerr - Michael Healey has
mentioned the 12" ruler thrashing, that was me, I acheived
this "honor" for wearing a short skirt. boy it stung.
didn't she have a long cane that was taller than herself? that
was one of the most painful experiences of my young life.
St Thomas More RC High, Wigan
Judith Holgate - 1971
Mr Wilde - Remember the Radio One
road show arriving at the Casino for the first time? there were
twenty one in his class for maths, only four turned up that day
as the rest of us were at the Casino. Next time we had a maths
lesson, he complained that we hadn't played a request for him. He
was a great teacher, and still used the cane, even though Sister
Rose had banned it.
St Mary`s, Astley, Manchester
Sarah Cardwell - 1984

did it hurt when she gave you the cane. but as she always said
this will hurt me more than it will hurt you - yeah right!
St Paul`s, Surrey
Joanna Cole - 1971
Mr Dan Archer - I am amazed that he
was still around in 1985 because I thought he was pretty ancient
when I left!
I have everlasting memories of him patrolling the school at
lunchtimes carrying his cane and keeping a watchful eye on
everything.
St Gabriel`s RC, Bury
Geraldine Chisholm - 1977
Do you remember? - Mrs Payne, the
only teacher to ever give me the cane.
St James CofE, Bolton
Yvonne Heywood - 1978
Memories of Mrs Boulter - I have to
agree with Gillian Smith's comments about this very special lady.
She was one in a million. Dab hand with a metal ruler over the
knuckles! Super aim with a board duster, and could spot a slacker
a mile off. Superb woman!
St Albans, St Helens
Julie Carlisle - 1977
Mrs Murphy - I can't believe that
there are messages from others referring to the above as hard but
fair. I was an extremely innocent and goody-two shoes little girl
and was only caned once in my entire life - and yes it was by
her. It's not so much the caning that I object to - I don't
suppose she did it very hard - but the fact that she did it in
front of a full classroom of older children who all laughed.
St Mary`s RC, Manchester
Carmel Carlisle - 1961
Conduct Marks - I remember that if
you received three conduct marks you had to go to the
"punishment room" for the strap (or the cane in the
case of the boys). At house meetings those not in school uniform
were given conduct marks. I didn't have the official uniform -
mine was a "look-alike" from C&A - my mum and dad
couldn't afford anything else. I gathered conduct marks for this
reason on a regular basis and made quite a few visits to that
frightening room. It had huge picture windows overlooking the
playground - punishments were usually carried out at playtime
(for maximum effect probably). I remember that some people used
to put lots of chalk on their hands first in the hope it wouldn't
hurt so much. I never told my parents I had been
"punished".
St Edmund Arrowsmith, Prescot
Julie Sothern - 1977
Miss Roberts wed Mr Melia - caught
me and sue walsh smoking outside common room, sent to miss reilly
for 6 of the best. good teacher, just tried to make us give up
smoking!!!!!!! didn't work, 25 years later still smoking
strong!!!!!!
St Edmund Arrowsmith RC, Prescot

wack ya with the cane.
St Aelred`s Catholic High,
Merseyside
Diana Thompson - 1970
Mrs Marchant - Caned three times,
and yes I deserved it, although rolling down the hill in the snow
right outside her window schoolskirt over my head was a dumb
thing to do!
St Michael's Secondary
School, Chelsea, London
Denise Wall - 1976
Mr Jones - Remember him
and his slipper well. He used to run from one end of the
classroom before administering the whack. But I believe he done
it for our own good, although I would never admit that at the
time.
Miss Surridge - I used
to think she was such a witch. Especially on detention when she
made me go around picking up pins from the floor. I wish I had
followed her advice though. I also sampled the infamous Jonsey
slipper (Yes girls used to get punished too).
St Marylebone C of E
Central Secondary, Westminster, London
Janis Mason - 1967
I recall Miss (Nellie) Dean,
with her handbag always on her arm teaching us Geography - Miss
Saville trying to teach music, I recall having a really bad crush
on a Dave Robbins! walking down to Baker Street to a music shop
and listening to records in booths! walking along Marylebone High
Street singing Beatles songs, once getting the slipper along with
Susan Ash for doing so! I recall Christine Black with the
shortest or mini's.
Stamford Community,
Ashton-under-Lynne
Karen Broad - 1976

waiting outside Miss Warren`s or Edgy`s office waiting for the
cane? Whack!!!!. Girls got it across their hands, boys across the
backside.
Stroud Green Secondary, Haringey
London
Janette Simpson - 1960
Mr. Stephens - Nickname
"Inky" for obvious reasons. Very large built man and
quite imposing, his deputy was a shadow of a man in comparison.
Could dish out the cane with great relish.
Shipston High, Warwick
Margaret Freeman - 1960
Percy Suader - Our first lesson
with Mr Lewis should have been History, but instead he introduced
us to "Percy Suader" the cricket bat he kept by his
desk for dealing with bad behaviour!
Swinton, Rotherham
Jayne Wilson - 1979
Mrs Bergin - Me and my mate Jane
Pearson are 10 years apart and can both remember Mrs Bergin well,
she was a classic with that bat cape and high heels. She caned me
and I still loved her.
St
Blaise RC Middle, Bradford
Mandy
Bowden - 1970
Sister
Immaculata - Couldn't spell it properly when I was there, so it
probably is spelt wrong now. What an awesome sight, striding down
a corridor or across a playground with habit and vail flying. She
could produce a cane from nowhere as quick as anything you see in
Harry Potter! In morning assembly she used to make a row of girls
kneel and if your skirt didn't touch the floor - you felt that
cane.
St Columba's RC High, Fife Scotland
Carol McNeill - 1969
Mrs Dawson (Flossie) - A strange

be tangled with. A good maths teacher however.

them on Games days (not literally) then a public flogging ensued.
St Robert

Matty
Pallister - Seemed to derive just a little
too much pleasure from inflicting pain to an upturned palm.
Julie
Browell - 1989
Mr Hurst -
Belta teacher. Remember being in his office waiting for the strap
while everyone was raking the ashtray for his dumpers.
Sidmouth
County High School for Girls, Hull
Andrea
Hebblethwaite - 1959
Miss
Sheppard was the headmistress at that time, she was o.k. although
she caned my 2 mates and I for keeping mice in our desks. How
mean was that? although they did eat the exercise books during
the night and apparently when the cleaners opened our desks the
mice did jump out.
St John Payne RC
School, Chelmsford
Teresa Knott - 1976
Mrs Linge - Brilliant
story teller and maths teacher. Couldn't have got my O level
without her. Gave me the cane when I was younger though.

Tadcaster Grammar,
Yorkshire
Jenny Dixon - 1975
Humpston - Humpston
always the last to arrive at assembly, always with a hole in his
gown, always rocking backwards and forwards on those shoes of his
for a silent eternity giving us all the evil eye, always still
chewing his breakfast...if the olympics had a section for
corporal punishment this guy would have won gold.
Tracey Wilson - 1977
Mr. Humpston who's
brown brogues you would here coming into assembly and would
quiver in your shoes in case he read your name out to go to his
office.
Templehall, Fife Scotland
Elaine Seefeldt - 1970

learnt very quickly to walk along the corridor.....lol
Theale Green Community, Reading
Catherine Walter - 1980
70's & 80's memories - Mr
Shield, excellent Head and not afraid of caning. I remember Nicky
Johnson having a fag behind the sports hall prior to a caning
session with Mr Shield and showing us the exercise books he had
stuffed down his trousers for extra padding! Hope it worked...
Tottington High, Bury
Kay Wallbank - 1963
Miss Brooks (Catty) - I remember
her well---and her ruler on my legs. Kids today have it too
good!!
Jackie Nolan - 1977
Miss Brooks Katty - I must have
been that woman`s nightmare, I was there at least 3 times a week
for that ruler slapped on back of my legs, but she made you bend
your legs so it hurt even more. Also she must have loads of my
rings & earrings, they were never given back at end of term.
And she was the one who said girls could not wear makeup. The
cheek of her, she always had bright pink lipstick on.
Louise Morris - 1983
Mrs Howarth - I think she was

Dorothy Whyte - 1962
Mr Upson - Boy did he like using
the cane.
Patricia Sutton - 1965
Mr Colebourne - My first year
teacher, I don't think he had been at Theobalds long. Used to
throw a bunch of keys at you if he caught you talking in class.
Gave a friend and me the ruler once for being late to class when
we had been helping in the garden. Even so, he was a good teacher
and I liked him.
Heather Pringle - 1966
Mr Midgley - I was petrified of Mr
Midgley because I was useless at Maths and I remember being
slapped on the back of my legs with a plimsoll because I got
everything wrong! Hard to imagine at one time of my life I was a
chief cashier at a bank!!
Tring School, Hampshire
Helen Stone - 1966
Mr Green - Very adept with a ruler.
Turnford School, Hampshire
Christine Hamilton - 1974
Mr Mcleish - I remember regulary
attending his office for the cane. I think he was deputy head and

the cane. I must have attended at least once a week usually with
either Dave Edwards, Dave Hewlett or Robert Pickett.

Tina Brown - 1972
We had Mr Potts in 2nd yr (lucky
us). I still remember him giving me the slipper like it was
yesterday. I was in Mill house.
Upton by Chester High, Chesire
Sue Ross - 1976
Fights!!! - Bob Jones (the
Environmental Studies teacher) otherwise known as Grizzly due to
the beard he had. I remember him being totally shocked to find
out I was smoking (that's what you get when you go out with a
tearaway by the name of Taffy apparently!) He once made me give
the cane to Janet Oldfield because we had forgotten to do our
homework.
Vincent Secondary
School, Northolt, Middlesex
Leslie Poole - 1957
Caned - I can remember
being caned for smoking out of school after paying a visit to the
American air base one dinner time. I spent two years there, and
went on to Walford when it opened.
Rita McIlvar - 1962
I have grown up now
with my suitable dress sense - no more sugar and water stiff
petticoats under my uniform! Nor long hair hanging loose instead
of tied back.
Wonder if she still has her cane which was used on me a few
times!
Vincent School - I remember Mr
Rose, also Miss Wager who use to pull me out of line for wearing
stiff full petticoats under my summer skirt. Also she use to tell
me off for wearing my hair loose instead of tying it back. I
really liked Mr Miller the Headmaster and Mr Webster who took us
for history. Marianne Oliver and I use to hate playing hockey and
find ways and means of avoiding the game.
I remember smoking in the toilets and getting sent to Mr Miller
for the cane, but I got on so well with Mr Miller he just told me
to stand outside his office for 20 mins.
Maureen Roberts - 1965
He taught
shorthand/typing. He was our form teacher in the 5th year. He
used to hit our wrists with a paintbrush he called Socrates if we
were caught looking at the keys on the typewriter.
Doreen Piper - 1966
Miss Phillips - P.E
teacher. A little woman with a big voice and very handy with a
plimsoll.
Viewforth High, Fife Scotland
Helen Mackie - 1965
Miss Webster - Does anyone remember
Miss Webster - history teacher and mean with the belt? I became
teacher's pet rather quickly but this didn't help remember the
history!
Also Mrs Taylor - our music teacher
at the time - another one to DRAW the belt but good fun at times.
We had a very unruly class - on reflection I feel very sorry for
the teachers! I think our class was responsible for setting fire
to the prefects room at the time! On several occasions our whole
class used to be in the corridor waiting in line for the belt -
very painful - especially the doublers! Me - I was an angel of
course!
Linda Spence - 1977
Mr Lemon - If you had been a
student of Mr Lemon's in the 70's you would have got six of the
best with his big fat belt. He used to tell everyone he pickled
it in vinegar to make it really hard. I remember he spoke through
his nose and we used to call him Fat Jack.
Wallace High, Stirling Scotland
Catherine Irmes - 1980
Mr Sykes - The only
B I ever got in my life was in French. Thank you Mr Sykes for
making me want to learn. I think the leather strap you kept under
your jacket was a good inspiration as well. One of the original
good old fashioned teachers.
Wick High, Highland

Fiona Duncan - 1975
Whole school - After
coming from a 'forces school' this was quite a rude awakening,
the 'Rector' went round in a long black gown, and God help anyone
who done wrong by him! the 'strap' was used often by many
teachers, but if you had to see the Rector it was the cane or
'salted' slipper. (supposed to be more painful!)
Warren, London
Sandra Gregory - 1974
Mr Smith - He used to parade the
corridors seeking out unfortunate souls that had been sent out of
class for misbehaviour, then round them up for the cane. I always
believed he was a bit of a sadist!!!
Jacky Smart - 1974
Mr Price, TD Teacher - I was one of
the first girls to undertake TD at Warren (having been thrown out
of cookery class by Mrs Lamb). I remember Mr Price as always
hitting me on the back of my hand with a ruler if I didn`t use
fancey handwriting. He was a hard teacher but as there were only
two girls who took TD I think he was pleased when both of us
passed our GCSE. Thanks for the pain Mr Price.
Woodchurch High School,
Woodchurch
Tracey McDonough - 1971
Nelly Layland
(headmistress) - Any of the girls remember that lethal cane and
those yellow tobacco stained net curtains.
I remember getting the
cane for wearing make-up.
Susan Dade - 1977
Mrs Bracegirdle - Used
to pull me from lessons and send me to collect the
"naughty" girls for the cane. Thanks for making me so
many enemies.
Kirsten Heerwagen -
1980
Mr Davies - The best
headmaster ever - firm but fair. If you were made to clean the
fish tank in Mr Eason's lab you knew you where in trouble - Mr
Davies kept his canes there to keep them supple.
Washington
School, Washington, Tyne & Wear

Mr
Grant - Now there was a man who seemed to
thrive on corporal punishment. At every opportunity he could, he
would use his favourite board ruler, write OUCH! backwards on it
in chalk and whack any poor s*d who stepped out of line, leaving
a perfect print of pain.
Mr
Roughly - I remember him well. One day one
lad got dragged out of r.e. for the slipper. Out into the
corridor, by the ear of course. Our class could not resist the
spectacle and rushed to watch through a tiny piece of glass in
the door just to observe the poor guy`s agony. We all rushed back
to our seats as if butter would melt only to be dragged back out
into the corridor ourselves to be soundly whipped one by one at
Mr Roughlys pleasure. Needless to say we only ever listened
after that.

Miss
Dobson - I put a wet dishcloth on top of
the larder door to catch my schoolmates, but instead I got Miss
Dobson on the head!! I got the cane!!!

Glenda

Mr
Painter - What happened to Mr Painter? I
remember receiving the slipper from him, but he was ever so
gentle. Great bloke, fond memories.
Wisewood School,
Sheffield
Joanne Needham - 1981
Mr Carter - When we
used to `misbehave` hed give us the option of lines or
shoe! We always chose shoe to get it over and done with quicker!!
Wingfield

Gillian Smith - 1969
Mrs Whitely - Only got
the cane once!
Whiefriars, Harrow, London
Valerie Pittard - 1950s
Memories - What about Miss Lewis and Miss Lansbery, both
ready with the cane at the drop of a hat.
West End County, Ashton-under-Lynne
Susan Beeley - 1968
West End Sec - My memories of West
End Sec. The uniform, wearing a navy blue beret that I used to
only wear when I approached the school gates, but if you were
seen outside school without it (your name was given out in
assembly). Being caned by Mr Woodhead (music teacher) for
laughing in his class! Having to stand outside the cookery
classroom every week for misbehaving in Miss Tattersall's class.
Well it was better than making rock buns! The Head was Mr Brunner
who I had to face on several occasions.
Wilmslow County, Cheshire
Juliet Scott - 1972
Miss Aldridge - Whilst we were
trampolining in the assembly hall, Miss Aldridge came striding
past with cane in hand to sort out the commotion in the music
room. She came striding back again still with cane in hand with
two girls following.
Woodcote High, London
Lucinda Stockton - 1978
Mr Humphreys - Bit of a
"dish" (wonder what he's like now?). He had a plimsoll,
which he would slam very hard on his desk, and threaten to use if
we didn't do our homework. It certainly worked in my case - mind
you, I never actually saw him use it.
Welling School, Welling
Donna Harris - 1980
Classmates - I can
remember big bird and sally brown, wasn`t at Welling long. I
remember Mrs Harris and the grief she used to give me. I also
remember getting caught smoking in toilets with Sally and Kerry,
and getting 6 strokes of cane for smoking, and 6 for not telling
who else was with me. It really hurt, and unfortunately still
smoke. Also school discos at lunchtime and the boys dancing to
one step beyond.
Wellington Road, Manchester
Elizabeth Rowan - 1976
Mr Stamford - That typing teacher
mentioned in this list was called Mr Stamford and he used to
thwack a ruler right across all the knuckles of both hands if you
looked at the keyboard! Ouch! By the way - I can touch type in a
coal shed, wearing boxing gloves at 70 wpm with 100% accuracy!
Ward`s Bridge High, Wolverhampton
Gwynn Price - 1956
Mr Kennings - He was headmaster
from the start of the school back in 1956, an he was there up to
1960 when I left. Ruthless with the cane, but only if deserved.
Wednesfield High, Wolverhampton
Daphne Dennis - 1986
Miss 'Shelly' Ridout - Met up with
her a number of years ago. She got married, had twins then got
divorced. Was still playing netball and basketball at the time,
invited me to train with her. Don't know why as she hated me at
school and wanted to cane me for leaving the school choir after
she became deputy head of our year with Mr Westwood. Whatever
happened to him?
Wanstead High, London
Lesley Ainsley - 1976
Alan John - I remember on the first
day at Wanstead having a meeting of the whole year in the sports
hall. Alan John said if anyone forgot their kit he would give
them the slipper - and that included the girls. I was terrified
of him thereafter - although I know he was well thought of by the
boys.
Whiston, Prescot
Karen Gleave - 1977
Mr Potter - Always good with the
slipper, and always at hand next to the blackboard.
Worden High, Preston
Linda Townson - 1969
Betty Rigby - Headmistress and took
us for office arts. She never went anywhere without her handbag
swinging from her arm - even while on duty during break times.
She also sent me for the cane three times for little
"naughties", but I've never held it against her. I
still write to her and visit her when I'm in the UK, and what's
more, I love her to bits.
Warwick Bolam, Sefton
Mandy Muldoon - 1983
One teacher who has stuck in my
mind after all these years is Mr Williams the maths teacher. I
was totally scared of him and he was not afraid to cane a girl.
Westbourne High, Suffolk
Dawn Adams - 1983
Various - Mr Martin the Geography
teacher who liked administering 'Simon the Slipper' - generally
in his office to girls, he used a ruler for punishment too but
the name of it escapes me.
Ysgol Mair, Rhyl, Wales
Maureen Murray - 1960
Mr. Davies
Fascinating to read an update about Mr. Davies. He taught me in
last year juniors in 1960 (11.plus year, in those days ) He was
very strict! Butter wouldn't melt in my mouth those days, I was
such a wimp! But he gave me the cane for having a blot in my
English work-book ! I feel better for that! Glad I went to the
Convent where the cane was never needed, just a 'look ' from one
of the Nuns was enough!
(SF&R NOTE) Ysgol
Mair, Rhyl, Wales was attended by TV presenter Carol Vorderman in
the 1970s.
