Miss Burchill - Miss Birchill gave me the cane because she caught me smoking in the girls toilets!!!! I have now given up!! I also remember Mr. Frederickson, he was really scary with his big shiny polished brown squeeky shoes!!!

Christine Sylvester - 1964

Miss Burchill - The only time that I received corporal punishment was from Miss Burchill...for reading comics in assembly...a good thwack across the hand with the biggest ruler that I had ever seen. A couple of years later, when I was Head Girl, she made a passing comment on the 'event' but never mentioned it again....Oh happy days!!!

Mill Chase Community School, Hampshire

Marilyn Whillians - 1970

Ms Henwood - The most awesome scary teacher ever to grace the halls of Mill Chase. Within a month or two of starting this wonderful establishment I received my first (of many) order marks. Whereupon I was summoned to Miss Henwood's room, she was the head of Winchester at the time, I was soundly thrashed with a piece of 4 By 2. I would like to say I learned a lesson but unfortunately, I most certainly did not. The only thing I can add to this is that once I had been punished, I did eventually become good friends with her and also admired her very much as a teacher.

Middlewich High, Chesire

Jennifer Ashley - 1959

Miss Walton - I remember Miss Walton, I did not realize she stayed around for such a long time. I was talking in class and was sent to the headmistress by her and got the cane. I still liked her though. She used to live at Cranage and ride her bike to Byley where I lived, and caught the school bus with us kids. Those were the days.

Mold Alun, Wales

Patricia Harrison - 1960

Jack and Molly Evans - Do you remember Jack 'Pimp' the Geography Teacher and his wife Molly 'Murder' the Craft Teacher - so named because of those lethal canes which weren't always used merely for basket-work.

Marlborough Girls' School, Isleworth

Pauline Taylor - 1963

Memories - Miss Pritchard used to frighten me. Did you all know they have now pulled down our old school and built houses? Now that is sad. Can't show our kids where we went to school. My memories of Marlborough were getting the cane for reading Lady Chatterley's Lover, always being late for class and generally getting into trouble.

Linda Tolmie - 1966

Miss Tweed - I had a lot of respect for Miss Tweed but at the same time she seemed larger than life. I never had to go and have the cane (phew) but I remember a few girls having to go. I think we expected them not to come back the same as when they went!.

Meadway, Reading

Shirley Hall - 1974

Mr Downs, Science Teacher - At least 7ft tall, Joe 90 specs and size 12 feet of which he kept a size 12 plimsole in his desk drawer for disciplinary measures. I once tossed it out of the upstairs window in the science dept whilst he was out of the room - as I was one of its recipients - someone grassed on me and he made me fetch it and then whacked my backside with it six times....ouch - the memory.

Mr Gledhill - Very scary maths teacher. Used to hit you with a ruler or flick you with his half a finger if you weren't listening.

Northolt High, Middlesex

Sue Allen - 1977

Mrs Bearne - A very good PE teacher but would not mind using the slipper on you if you forgot your kit or she caught you playing on the swings in the park, instead of running round it. But then she did always come down in her little sports car and never ran with us.

Notre Dame, London

Margaret Merriman - 1959

Miss Plummer - Our beloved P.E.Teacher, we played truant one afternoon from our lesson and went home early, next day we had to sit outside Sister Joseph`s office and she gave us the cane across our buttocks, never again.

New Moston County, Manchester

Lynda Birks - 1962

Class of 62 - Does anyone remember Carol Seddon or the letch of the year who was Bill Ramsley? I can`t say that my memories of New Moston Secondary were happy ones - the teachers were all bullies especially the RE teacher Miss Young, and I spent most of my time in the corridor or in the Head`s office getting the strap!

New Moston Class Photo 1962

Orchard, Berkshire

Sandra Mackenzie - 1960

Mr Plowright - Fab music teacher, scrupulously fair if you were in trouble. You always had the choice of the black plimsol (and not to wear) or the white one.

Orange Hill, London

Leslie Kauffer - 1958

Teachers - I remember Mr. White, (English teacher) with great fondness, he gave me my love of Literature & had a lovely dry sense of humour. I also vividly remember a Mr. Althans (maths & geog.) who ruled by sheer terror - we used to get caned if our marks weren't up to scratch. Then there was "The Duke" of course (headmaster) who also had a great love of using "the Stick" Needless to say I hated my time there & was never so pleased as when I left!

Oakwood, Southgate

Pamela Lyon - 1961

Miss Fugle and Miss Goodship - I remember Miss Goodship very well. She was a sweet, very patient needlework teacher (she had to be with the state of my needlework). I still have the diary we had to make with the pictures, and the clogs I brought.

Kim Cresdee - 1972

Arthur Coote - Woodwork teacher of the very old school!
He caned me in my first year for flicking lumps of wood with a steel rule.

Helen Saville - 1973

What happened to Mr Coote and his cane?

Park Mains High, Erskine Scotland

Linda Ahmed - 1980

School Tie Strike - Yes, I remember the school tie strike. What a laugh! Loads of us being very rebellious, dancing about outside with our ties round our heads. We were all told to get back to our classes and we would not be punished. I had a science class with that lovely tempered chap, Mr Alexander? Needless to say myself and fellow rebels of that class promptly got the belt!!

Penilee, Glasgow

Margaret Cameron - 1962

Miss McDonald - She used to belt me and send me to the toilets to wash the muck off my eyelashes, she would not believe I was not wearing make up. Her class (for English) was behind the stage. She had a habit of leaving her cigarettes in the loo (situated in the same area) which I pinched and hid in my knickers, shared them with my friends. I used to pinch her belts too - got fed up being walloped by them. Hid them behind the cupboard in Miss Crumbs music room at least 6 of them.

Isobel Stewart - 1968

Mr Nelson - Indeed great with the belt, duster, chalk and anything else he could use as an unsuspected flying missile. Trouble was you could neither rely on his aim or the fact he had hand picked the right person to be on the receiving end of the three fingered belt! and then you got belted at home for getting the belt!!!!

Karen Brown - 1978

Mrs Kirsop - The only teacher I ever got the belt from - and it was sore!

Alison Laurie - 1980

Palatine, Blackpool

Linda Conway - 1969

Mr Eardley - A fantastic geography teacher....do you remember the famous slipper. I had a real crush on Mr Dave Eardley. I dreamed of running away to the Himalaya's with Mr Eardley, but all he ever taught us was about reclaiming the Fjord's in Norway. Great days at Palatine.

Mr Kitchen - Teacher of English and my form teacher for 2 years (4L and 5L). Wore shiny shoes, open neck shirts, flares and medallians...in the 80s!! Also took to wearing plasters on his neck, dont know why!! I remember him hitting me on the backside with a piece of wood (part of a desk). It had a chalked cross on it which ended up on my arse. Great teacher, good fun, but wouldn't take any hassle.

Peckham Manor, Peckham, London

Irene Seago - 1965

I don't remember a Deputy Head called the "Major", but I thought he was Mr Bilson, who certainly looked like a major if my recollection is right. He was certainly the first one to give me the cane.

Sharon Gillespie - 1960

Mr Burrell was my form teacher from 1958-60. Remember him having a body like an upsidedown triangle, with a small head!!!! And he lived sports and was fond of winding you with the medicine ball! And took great joy in smacking your bum with your own plimsoll!

Mrs Cheney
Myself, Mandy Freeman, Theresa Downey & Julie Ball were all in the toilet block smoking when someone yelled "Cheney`s Coming", so all four of us went in one toilet together. She waited for us to come out when we thought the coast was clear. No, there she was. Julie was so skinny she hung herself to the back of the toilet door and Cheney didn`t catch her. Mandy, Theresa, Myself on the other hand ended up with the cane.

Rachael Mansfield - 1981

Miss Tucker - Very large lady who caned me and I believe Mel Leyshon, Alison Turner and possibly Fiona Watson for mitching or was it smoking in the boys toilets!!

Christine Hill - 1983

Mrs Tucker - I can remember myself and Susan Gardener being thrown out of our Geography class and being told to polish the sixth form floor, we did this with the help of a litre bottle of polish, then sat on the top of the stairs having a little rest when Mrs Tucker marched in, slipped and went flying across the newly polished floor breaking one of her legs, oops. We ran out of the school as we were terrified of getting the cane.

Lynsey Brown - 1993

The Cane - Yes I do remember the cane! Rachel Cooper and I got it, the rest of Kenny dorm got the slipper (except Adele Kirkman, who insisted that she was asleep!) I particularly remember how Miss Thomas used to go and select which cane to use, and then before each strike used to jump (what seemed like) 3ft in the air! and if you made a sound or moved she used to give you another one. Luckily I only got three, poor Rachel got six.

Mr Evans - I joined in Mr Evans' last year. He was replaced by Miss Merwood. My Mum always said the school went downhill after that! I remember being in Mrs Wooller's class. Once a week Mr Evans would come and read to us. We were all so terrified of his canes that we sat in perfect silence! Once he left I often used to chat with him (and his wife) at the bus stop. I realised then that he was a normal human being and a lovely one at that!

Renfrew High, Renfrew Scotland
