Having placed it aside for future disciplinary action, one of my class mates (Tiller) foolishly stated the obvious "I bet that would hurt sir!" Linda Borrill - 1980

Miss Williams
Lower school head who loved giving out the cane. I only had the pleasure once. She`d stand there with a bit of brown paper wrapped around the end of it so she didn`t hurt her fingers.

Vicki Davenport - 1961

Sr Berchman - I was quite dreadful at needlework and she was always making remarks about my lack of endevour. One day she exploded that if I carried on without making proper effort that I 'would never get to heaven!'. I quickly retorted (but quietly) that I would meet her in the 'other place'. She could not quite hear, so as all my friends were laughing around me and I refused to admit what I had said, I was given 500 lines and got the ruler to the back of the hand.

Sue Stewart - 1977

Grown Up A Bit Now - Bingley Grammer School`s 1st Rebel..... oops, yep that was def me, always in trouble and the one teachers called the No-Hoper, welllll, guesse they were wrong. Have grown up a lot since them crazy days of sneaking a cig at back of class, throwing sarcastic love notes at poor Mr Brain, playing truant in the park and always on the wrong end of the cane and detention. I often wonder what they would think if they see me now, all nice n sensible holding down a high flyers job. Though of course I still know how to partyyyyyyy.

Zoe Marshall - 1975

The Cane - Hi, I don`t suppose anybody remembers me but I have a question, I was caned by the Headmaster in 1973, can you tell me his name? I have forgotten it, and also I was caned on my bottom, I have often wondered if I am the only girl who was caned on the bum, it really hurt.

Miss Leonard, P.E. teacher, who was stronger than any man at giving the cane.

Jill Smallbone - 1966

Dymchurch - Memories of Dymchurch - washing in cold water for a week - smacked by Mrs Plumb for getting caught out of bed to have a swig of Susan Euston's lemonade when lights were out - playing rounders with the borstal boys who were staying there at the same time, and very long walks along the sea front in an attempt to tire us out before bed time.

Barnhill, Hillingdon

Moya Weir - 1975

70/75 Did we have fun or what? - Does anyone remember Mr. Walbridge the pottery teacher? and the teacher who's name I can't remember but she was deadly at throwing the blackboard rubber at you along with whacking you across the knuckles with any large implement that came to hand. I remember my first punishment for whatever reason? came by the way of the traditional dunlop plimsoll which if some of you remember is ---- painful.

Balfron High, Stirling Scotland

Carol McLaren - 1979

Miss Quinn - I remember to this day that Miss Quinn called me out of P.E. On arrival at her class she was adamant that I had written "I love Carol" on one of her desks. On the reply of " I know I love myself Miss Quinn, but I would never write it on a desk", she decided to give me 2 of the belt for embarassing her if front of the first years(I was in 3rd). Once she had belted me she said "good, you were the last McLaren I had to belt, I have belted all the rest". She nearly wore that belt of hers!!!!!

Leigh McCune Photo

Miss Brownlee - A well respected Head Mistress. I think fear of visiting her office with the rumored cane cupboard was enough to make us behave most of the time.

Myra Curnow Photo

Bishop Challoner RC, London

Patricia Crawley - 1968

Nuns - I well remember Sister Berchmans, she used to cane me nearly every day for one reason or another, normally it was because I refused to be brow beaten by her.

Janet O`Driscoll (pictured) - 1972

Teachers - Remember Sister Berchmans giving you the cane for the slightest reason like not having your beret on correctly? Having a fag outside the toilets, and when we were caught had to pick every dog end out of the cracks in the walls - and there were hundreds - and still got the lecture on how unhealthy and unladylike it was, as well as getting the cane (again).

Burnholme Community College, York

Catherine Richardson - 1951

Mr Bill Escritt - He was so patient. I had a few 6 of the best from him but I deserved it.

Dianne Leavitt - 1966

Mr White - Was always going to 'join the Foreign Legion'. He used to say you were better off being caned by Mr Green than him as he was a long way up and the cane would come down much harder! Super man.

Bridgewater, Manchester

Dawn Lonergan - 1979

Mr Rudge - The headmaster who most resembled Professor Yaffel from Bagpuss, the gaunt Mr Rudge left Bridgewater around 1980'ish. Taught us a wide range of subjects, from what I can remember, however I best remember him for his obsession with the novel The Silver Chair, his cane (ooer missus!) and the phrase 'time is of the essence!' I spent many a terrifying hour being spanked in his office!

Bitterne Park, Southampton

Linda Reeves - 1972

Mrs Dunlop - Yes, who could forget Mrs Dunlop, who tried to force some singing talent out of us. To add to her frustration the ones who had some did not find it cool to use it. She was responsible for my only caning at the school. The terrible crime I committed was forgetting my Hymne book (several times).

The Billericay, Essex

Linda Clark - 1972

Mr Rosslyn - short balding man with dark hair - he always got Cherry Blossom for his birthday from various pranksters so he could polish his very brown bald pate! He always took it in good humour although I remember he was the man to dish out the cane!

Amanda Dunsford - 1981

Cloughie - Choose which slipper you want !! The size 11 (medium in stature) The plimsole size 7 (very thin but stung like hell) or the Monkey Boot with a very deep tread (probably a size 9). On top of that he would chalk it up for you so everyone in school would see that you got it!! preference for the size 11 - he couldnt really get a good swing out of that , although he tried - I,m sure he enjoyed it. Karl Harrison (Harry - Richard Frazer`s best mate).

Birkdale High, Southport

Julie Ackers - 1978

'Taffy' Davies - Hey Graham, you say Taffy didn't cane girls well I can assure you he does, I know coz I got the dreaded cane right across my hand, all because my friend and I had been caught smoking 3 times (well I wasn't actually smoking the 3rd time as my friend was lighting up from mine!!!) so we got the cane.

Lisa Brown - 1984

Ms Wendy Rawdon - Unless you were at the school in 1984 or before you didn`t know Miss Rawdon. Well she was strict, very strict, and she used to walk through the school with a cane in her hand. Believe me she didn`t need to use it we were all scared of her, but at the end of the day she was firm but fair and that is what all schools need, someone to look up to and pay respect to. She certainly wouldn`t have allowed students nowadays to act as they do. One up to you Miss Rawdon, we will never forget you.

Beauchamps High School, Essex

Janet Reece - 1969

Mr Woolnough - Oh how I remember those Maths classes. I was always bottom of the class and always got picked on. The final straw came one day when I was trying to get John Hood to give me the answer to a question that I couldn't answer and because I got it wrong I had to go out the front where "Hertz" the great white slipper was whacked across my backside. Who said girls never got the slipper?

Burnopfield Secondary, Newcastle

Maxine Ketchin - 1961

Miss Hannah Buglass - Miss Buglass was my 1st form teacher in 1A. She was rather fearless when she produced her cane but her bark was worse than her bite. She stood for no nonsense and if your needle work was not up to standard she made you pull it all out and start again.

Beal High School, Ilford, Essex

Lisa Carson - 1979

Mr Stannard - Does anyone remember lining up to be hit with the cane by him? I remember crying and him saying "Shut up child, we haven't hit you yet". Says it all doesn't it.

Brook Secondary, Loughton, Essex

Catherine Quaife - 1972

Mr Lewis and his size 9 white plimpsoll for whacking you.

Teachers - Were they ever totally in control? it always seemed to me that the slipper from Mr lewis (Science) the chalk board rubber from Mr Mansfield (Maths) and the evil eye of Miss Sorrel (Deputy Head) didn`t do too much harm. But did it keep us in line?

Cardinal Allen, Oakwood Road, Enfield

Anne England - 1965

Ms Frazer (Headmistress) - Blond, loads of makeup, strong perfume, cross eyed, false nails (her sister was very similar).Sure she had some endearing qualities!!
Remember all those canes she had in the corner and remember how they felt too!

Mr Van Der Akker (Maths teacher) Tall with curly hair, another slipper happy teacher, always using a trainer from one of his pupils.

Jewellery - I remember Mr Wild, not one of my favourites and like Donna I always had the comments about not being like my sisters. He caught me having an argument in the corridor with Maria Loizou and sent us both to Mrs Frazer. Six strokes of the cane followed, 2 blue fingers & you had to go back to your class as if nothing had happened. Poor Maria got an extra 'lash' as Frazer spotted a ring on one of her fingers.

Charlemont Secondary Modern Girls, West Bromwich

Cecil Jones High School, Southend

Neil Adlington - 1975

Mrs .Heap - Deputy head. What a woman, made Maggie Thatcher seem like a pussy cat. For the girls it was the slipper and the boys no messing straight in with the cane but always fair.

Croockston Castle, Glasgow Scotland

Rosemary Docherty (pictured) - 1968

The belt - What a wuss you are McDonald! The belt was our true motivator! Clearly you would have made more of your life if like us you had been 'belted'!

Claydon High, Ipswich

Sylvia Prentice - 1955

Mr Woolnough - I too remember Mr Woolnough - I could not draw for toffees. I can remember getting the cane because I took too long to draw a horse. I cannot believe he was still there in 1975.

Chelsea Central, London

Sr. Agatha aka Aggie Baggie - Sr. Agatha practised the ancient art of caning on myself and I should imagine many more before.

Philomena Rooney - 1974

Mr Forkin & those Sisters - Does anyone remember Mr Forkin? what a control freak he was. He broke six rulers on my hand & had the cheek to send me to Sr Mary to say I broke the rulers. Sr Theo was quietly strict, Sr Agatha - sadist & Sr Mac although sweet could easily pull your face off!

Madeline Lyons - 1983

Sister Agatha - Does anybody remember how Sister Agatha would hit you over the knuckles with a ruler if you misbehaved during her classes?

Mr Winston - He was a maths teacher and I never forget when he hit me across the back of the legs with a stick because I had the giggles.

Bob Treasure - Does anyone have this claim to fame? being walloped on the backside with Mr Treasure`s cuddy walloper which was a wooden bat, then your name was written on the bat when punishment had been administered, Mr Eland sanded the bat down after every term ready for the new term. The boys were always hit much harder than the girls!!!

Cardinal Newman RC, Wigan

Clare Hollingsworth - 1973

Mr Carey - Seemed to take great delight in caning! I will never forget that day in my first year when he threatened to cane the whole class if another person dropped their pencil on the floor and he did!

Colne Park High, Lancashire

Donna Monk - 1975

Mr Copeland - Those were the good old times, Lynne Procter, June Turner, Anne Yates, and of course myself caught smoking, and Mr Copeland giving us the cane, always on the hand right on your finger tips, what a killer, but he was a nice guy just doing his job, still should do it now.

Donna Monk Photo

Mrs Williams - Commerce teacher, couldn`t stand the mortal sight of me, LOL. Jeanette Royal dared me to put pencil shavings in her B.Hive hairstyle, I got caught and sent to Miss Worthington for the cane. Precious memories, ha ha, fun days.

Chelsea Central, London

Janet Brown - 1955

I was only caned once, but I vowed it would never happen again (it didn't).

Eileen Brayson - 1966

Teacher/headmaster - Mr Woodlands, His nickname was "bullet", this was because when he gave you the cane you never saw it coming, you heard a whistle and then thwack, you felt it just like a bullet.

Chester Catholic High, Chesire

Tracy Warburton - 1976

Mr Breeze - Yes! he was my form teacher for a couple of years, and maths teacher, and no I was never on his wave length! I certainly wished I had had the courage to ask more questions instead of getting left behind. I sat with Angie, Eileen, Katherine, Margaret & Julie. I remember him saying we would regret not working in school, and yes I have. But I worked with horses for many years, travelled the country, and now work in an office helping with accounts, thank goodness for computers and the calculator. Now Mr Kindlan, not sure of spelling, but always remember his cane!

Cliffe House, Kent

Bethany Grant - 1965

Miss Amelia Fitt - Taught Latin and was Lower Third Form Mistress. A real dragon, and a firm believer that sparing the rod spoilt the child. I doubt there were many spoilt girls at Cliffe House during her reign!

Nicola Stevenson - 1965

Miss Fitt - Miss Fitt was lovely. At least she knew how to keep a class in order. She really brought Latin alive, I loved that subject. I try and use some of her methods in my teaching, although of course we are not allowed to whack the kids any more! Now Miss Pitman was another matter altogether, she was a total loss, couldn't control a class to save her life, And she had her favourites. Does anyone else remember when Bethany and Pamela, whose surname I forget, had that stand up fight in Pitty's lesson and the Head walked in!!!!

Bethany Grant - 1965

Miss Pitman - Hiya Prof (Nicola), still swotting? It was a tadge unkind of you to remind me and Pam (Johnstone by the way) of our run in with Miss Bailey. Dear old Ernestine, I wonder what she is doing now. Yes I do remember what happened, on a cold day I can still feel the effects nearly 40 years on!

Chamberlayne High, London

Phyllis Abercrombie - 1941

Mr (Bertie) Bass - Always a gentleman. Complete with bow tie, fancy waistcoat and spats. Wonderful Teacher. I also note (Mickey) Merkel still teaching into the 50's. He was our French Teacher. He carried a cane as thick as a curtain rod.

June Campbell - 1955

Mr Little - Mr Little was the headmaster, he wore a hearing aid. He also kept the Black Book in his office, and when you were naughty your crime and punishment would be recorded in it. If you got the cane, which we did in those days, the number of strokes was also recorded.

Chalvedon, Essex

Wendy Lomas - 1972

Form 1A - Anyone remember Mr Lloyd? on our very first day he he got a "dap" as he called it (a plimsoll to the rest of us) and wrote punishment on the bottom with chalk. He then told us that if we misbehaved he would hit us with it until all the chalk rubbed off. We were the best behaved class in the year after that.

Craylands, Essex

Vivien Morris - 1960

Mr Pugh - Think he took English. Can remember him walking the corridors with the cane up his sleeve, woa' betide anyone misbehaving!!!At least I learnt something in his class.

Stella Eggierth - 1964

Mr Haynes - I was sent outside Mr Marsden's class, for my usual misdemeanour of talking. Mr Haynes came along brandishing his curly cane. Henceforth I was never sent outside a classroom again!!

Camrose, London

Lynda Jessop - 1950

Miss Marsh - Small woman, rapped me accross my knuckles with a ruler for putting a tail on a 'G'.

Chorlton Central, Manchester

Hazel J Knowland - 1964

Miss Higson - I think she was Deputy Head. One day in the Typing room, (whilst Mrs. Crouch was out), some of us girls realised that when you got to the end of the line, the bell in the typewriter 'pinged', and if you held down carriage release and whizzed the carriage backwards and forwards, you could make a lot of noise....so we did. Miss Higson stormed into the room and shouted at us all to "Be quiet!" then she said "Stand up the ringleader" and looked straight at our little group. I turned to my friend Grace and said "Doesn't she mean stand up the Ping leader". Unfurtunately, Miss. Higson heard me and I got strapped for saying that and Grace got strapped for laughing.

Miss Isaacs - She taught History to us and instilled in me a love of the subject because she brought it all to life (or so I thought), but she was fierce on punishment! Usually we girls got slapped on the backs of our legs but one day almost the entire class got strapped because one of the lads had stuck a barbie-type doll's pink bra on to one of the pictures in the room. No one owned up of course, (but I know who you were!), so she strapped all of us who laughed...almost the entire class as I said.

Elaine Trainor - 1966

Mr Kesterton (ciggy) - I remember we were all strapped, boys and girls, for a chalk raid in his classroom. I think we were encouraged by the next year and told this was the norm when in the first year!! It was ideal for chalk raids etc as he had that high desk at the front. Needless to say were caught and punished. boys were caned and girls strapped. Taught me a lesson.

Glenys Patterson (pictured) - 1967

Hem Inspection in Assembly - I recall impromtu Hem Inspection in morning Assembly by Miss Higson. In the days of the Swingin Sixties, the girls rolled their skirts over at the waistband and made the skirt as short as possible (also making one look a bit like the Michelin Man at the same time). The desired effect was a tiny mini skirt. We filed in to Assembly, showing off our legs and Miss Higson made those with short skirts come up on stage and kneel in a line. If your skirt didn't touch the floor - you were either for the strap or a serious Detention! Ditto if you didn't wear your beret with badge showing at the front.

Chorlton Central 1965

Claremont Girls, Blackpool

Susan Cheetham - 1968

Does anyone remember? - Just found this site. what a great opportunity for remembering. Miss Hamlet of the 'Hiawatha whimisical' period as she put it. Miss Forshaw strict funny and always sarcastic, Miss Ogden, Headmistress, who sadly died whilst I was in the second year. Miss Tomlinson the art teacher who was always trying to make us into the artistic people we would never be. Mrs Best of the famous needlwork room. So may others I can remember. Priceless of all was hanging over the wall to chat to the boys and getting whacked for it. Oh those certainly were the days.

Cockburn High, Leeds

Rebecca Spark - 1956

Mr Les Williams - PT Teacher who played at centre for Hunslet RLFC at Parkside. Anyone remember the trek back to school from Joseph Street Baths. On one occasion after being late back a large number of us were banned from swimming the following week but still had to attend the baths. Because we ran back to school we were all given "the slipper". I should imagine that his arm ached after dealing with so many pupils!

Julie Mariner - 1963

Miss Malins - She was senior mistress for the girls. It was bad enough being sent to see her (although she was quite motherly as I remember) but if you'd been really bad (and I had) you were sent on to see Mr Sutcliffe. To Mary Thompson - he WAS God! And he has a cane!

Cedars Middle, Harrow

Karen Lewis - 1972

Mr Bennett - What a good teacher he was, only now I realise how much I respected him, how many times were we punished with the ruler on the back of the legs? He did it once to me only then my homework wasn`t done on time, I wish there were more like him, I work in a school now and have kids of my own and more Mr Bennets` would mean more kids had more respect. Also Mr Main was our headmaster, what a lovely man, always had time for his pupils, very old school, abit like Mr Chips, yes I know, but it`s the age.

Heidi Wood - 1980

Miss Kemp - It's so nice not to have to stand outside your office anymore! I remember you as looking like you'd just come from the 1940's! I don't think you liked me very much and the feeling was mutual. Looking back and having left the Middle School after a couple of years because we moved, it was a pretty strict school for its time. We weren't allowed to speak in the corridors, prefects with the 3 name rule, separate playgrounds and the slipper was still in use. The school I moved to was much more relaxed.

Carrickvale, Edinburgh Scotland

Margaret Fox - 1960

PE - I remember Mrs Dow (PE) teacher very well, she stood outside the changing rooms with a table tennis bat and she whacked our backsides with it if we were too long getting changed.

Charlemont Girls, Sandwell

Carol Hartwell - 1963

Miss Brettell, the deputy head. She sticks in my memory as being not very nice, this was in the days of the cane and she used to cane the girls if they stepped out of line, for the least thing.

Campsbourne Girls, Haringey, N.London

Joyce Whitfield - 1954

Miss Regis (Headmistress) - Always waited at the top of the stairs when it was end of playtime to see if she could catch you running up instead of walking. If caught, you had to wait outside her room and you might have got 'smacked' with the ruler on your hand. I did.
I realise now how good a headmistress she was.

Chelsea Central, London

Janice Wills - 1968

I remember the cane and book, got it quite a few times. Mrs. Aldworth gave me 6 of the best (Hands) for chewing in class!!!!But that was just the beginning, didn`t you find that once you had been caned the next time was never that bad, in fact you kinda felt cocky in front of your peers. Especially if you did'nt CRY!!!! What did that book mean anyway? It was kinda Sadistic making us walk to the HM office up those little wooden stairs and ask for it. I remember one time asking Mr. Gray (HM) at the time for the cane and book, he said who's it for and i said me and he gave me the thinest cane he had. Kind of him really.

Miss Phillips
Anyone remember her? I do believe she was Welsh, and had a vicious temper. If you spoke out of turn, you were out of the classroom or worse.....caned! She taught Biology and Maths, and maybe something else. Most of the Chelsea teacher's taught more than one subject. She was stern but fair, and also had a good sense of humour, if you caught her on a good day!!

Cardinal Newman RC School, Wigan

Elaine Roberts - 1973

Mrs Ryan
Deputy Head, very strict woman, caned me once for smoking in the toilets, I`ve never smoked in my life, never even tried it in the caravan were everybody used to smoke, hated her for it, she wouldn`t listen, always thought she knew best.

Clare Hollingsworth - 1973

Mr Carey
Seemed to take great delight in caning! I will never forget that day in my first year when he threatened to cane the whole class if another person dropped their pencil on the floor and he did!

Down Lane Central, Haringey, N.London

Penelope Hawkins - 1959

Photos - What a funny feeling looking hard at that photo of our school. I re-lived walking through those gates every day and yes, I discovered that it was Miss Cox that got me six of the best by looking at the photo of the teachers. I can't wait to be able to send in any photo that I can find in my Mum's album when I return in September.
Please, everyone, send in your photos.

Can anyone remember the name of the teacher - I thought she taught maths - who caned me? She was middle-aged, slim and had long dark hair which she would recoil. I was running one day and she caught hold of me -because we all know that you're not allowed to run in the school building - and she accused me of wearing mascara. I couldn't believe it. I had never used it at that stage. She insisted and because I insisted that it was not true - she organized that I get six strokes of the cane.

Dartmouth High, Sandwell

Jane Timmins - 1980

Mr Bellingham, scarey but lovely - After leaving school I went back to Dartmouth on work experience and worked a lot with Mr B. His bark was worse than his bite and as long as you behaved he treated you well. He was renowned for the cane but I don't think he ever really used it. It was on show in his office as a deterrent. That`s what is needed today.

Dene House, County Durham

Linda Ashman - 1975

Smoking - I'll never forget the day I was talking to friends behind the gym. Yes some were smoking. We were caught by an eagle eyed teacher. We all received a quick licking from the cane for smoking. I wouldn't have minded but I still don't smoke.

Julie Evans - 1976

Graffiti - The duty dinner lady caught a few of us in the toilets writing on the walls, the others had had their turn and I was just about to do the deed when we were caught, the only thing was I was the only one to get the ruler across the knuckles from Miss Worthy because I had the pen, even though I didn't get to write anything. I think this was a bit unfair. Miss Worthy thought it was justice for even attempting to write on her walls. Punishment = ruler and the scrubbing of the walls.

Deepdale Secondary, Preston

Gloria Moncrief - 1962

Miss Aspinall - Gosh what a load of memories have come flooding back down the years to see such an impressive list of names. Where are all those wonderful teachers now? and my goodness does this country need them, they ruled with a rod of iron and if you were brave enough to tell mum on your return from school you had got the cane you were given another hiding for misbehaving at school. Miss Budge I adored. I have seen her give the whole class a caning one after the other, all of us lining up to receive our punisment.

Deansfield High, Wolverhampton

Janet Roberts - 1975

Mr Lindley - Does anyone remember him in the Library with his black pump that he used instead of the cane? This may seem odd but I think he taught a lot of people respect for their elders with that pump.

Dawn Pickering - 1977

Radio One Roadshow at The West Park - Mr Ford (Deputy Head, Tall skinny man at least 7' tall - always wore the same light coloured suit. The school must have been very quite that day, most of us were at the park watching the 'Roadshow' I will never forget the sight of Mr Ford marching across the lawn with large cane, waving it towards the crowd. I can't tell you what happened next because I didn`t stay long enough to find out.

Amanda Challinor - 1980

Mrs Woodfine - She gave me the biggest slap across my backside. She caught me taking something out of her draw that she took off me earlier.

Dinnigton, Rotherham

Annette Kulmbacher - 1971

Miss Dunford - What a woman! I can still hear her shouting down the lower school corridors "Don't swing on those bars again! Thats it you are on report!" She could also wield a mean cane.

Heather Barnes - 1963

Mrs Lay - Taught English. I remember her being pregnant and the baby kicking her hymn book off her lap in assembly in the middle of one of Miss FizSimons' caning sessions.

Sue Pinder - 1967

Miss Fitzsimmons - Always wore that blue check suit with the velvet collar. Never ever remember seeing her in anythihg else. Very cold scarey lady. Myself and Lynn Stone got the cane from her once for bunking school. Only time she seemed to show any emotion (pleasure).

Dowsett High School for Girls, Essex

Lesley Edge - 1969

Miss Fitzsimons
One pupil in my year was to be caned by Fitzie and when asked to put out each hand she had both arms in plaster, then asked to bend over she had a lot of undergarments on, Fitzie got madder & madder.

Carol Waluga - 1974

Miss Fitzsimmons - The old headmistress who used to measure your skirts with a ruler to see they weren't too much above the knee as per the school regs, and used the cane when we were found smoking. If only she knew that we used to roll up our skirts by the waistbands till we had 30" waists in order to look fashionable on the way home!

Sarah Miles - 1975

Miss Fitzsimmons - I remember the cane for bunking off, smoking or fighting.

Dowsett Girls HS Photo 1969 / Dowsett Girls HS Photo 1974

Davidson Secondary, Surrey

Barbara Saunders - 1966

Miss Paxman - Was a young teacher and taught maths and R.E. Now me being a very shy pupil and never getting into trouble but I was always giggling. One lesson my friend Christine Cox and I had the soppy giggles and really wasn`t paying attention. Then a stern loud voice spoke our names to come out in front of the class my heart sank when she had a ruler in her hand, put out your hand knuckles up she cried, but my reaction was as soon as the ruler came whizzing down to pull my hand away - she got me in the end. Ouch! I always payed attention after that.

Earlsheaton High, Yorkshire

Susan Smith - 1983

Mr Levell? - Deputy head, always remembered for his 'this will hurt me more than it hurts you' statements.

Linda Lambert - 1971

Mr Collier - Can anyone remember - was he the maths teacher that owned 'Percy the Pump'?

English Martyrs RC, Bolton

June Morris - 1972

My Memories - Flossy with her gold tooth, never sure whether to wear her glasses or not, she used to put the fear of god in me. Mr Mitchell, tyrant if ever there was one. Mr Mercer, I have been on the receiving end of his slipper, probably because I was caught smoking in the alcove. Mr Boone fantastic music teacher, I just loved the Jesus sandles. Sister Edna the cookery gourmet. Mr Graham and Miss Butler, word had it there was something going on between those two.

Eirias High, Wales

Linda Price - 1981

Ellesmere Park High, Manchester

Gayle Barlow - 1963

Miss Howarth - Was a maths teacher in the far demountable (next to Mr Pennington who taught "horticulture"). She was an ace delivering the slipper, she would stand the unfortunate pupil at the front by the blackboard. She then went to the back of the room in order to "get a good run up" with slipper in hand before making contact with the victim's bent over rear. I seem to remember someone called Alan Vale in my tutor group receiving the accurately delivered "blow".

Mrs Spurrell - Taught girls PE. She was very scary if, like me, you hated PE. She loved to use the "slipper" (the largest plimsoll you ever did see). I dreaded her eyes settling on me because I was hopeless at almost every sport. However, I was good at dance and that may have saved me the dreaded "slipper".

Ellesmere Port Catholic High, Chesire

The Cane - My friend Janet Burgess (where are you now?) Was sent to Miss Ridyard because she was chewing gum in class. She got the cane. When she came back to class, she was still chewing. I asked her why she was still chewing the gum, she said I could not afford to waste it.

Elliott Durham, Nottingham

Lorraine Williamson - 1979

Cane - Remember the cane for boys and the ruler for girls - I had that a few times.

Evelyns Community School, Hillingdon, London

Stella Manley - 1948

*Mr Harlock - A big six footer ex guardsman who`s favourite weapon was the tawse, a thick leather strap split at the end, two strokes of that brought weals up on your hands, and Oscar State the sports master who trained the olympic weight lifters, a dab hand with the slipper.
Dr Hitchcock who every morning walked around the school picking up the punishment detail, you had to stand outside the classroom door and wait for him then on to his study, he took no excuses, just caned you even if you were innocent.

Fernhill, Hampshire

Christeen Beeden - 1976

Memories - Miss Dobson and her wicked cane, beat me for not holding out my hand.

Finnieston, Glasgow Scotland

Marion Clark - 1966

Mr McIver - He was very strict. When he gave you the strap you knew all about it. I was blowing chewing gum bubbles in assembley, and felt the wrath of Mr McIver. He normally punished the boys but I must have been an exception. Needless to say I never had chewing gum in school again.

Finnart, Greenock Scotland

Irene MacDougall - 1964

Mass Belting of Girls - After dinner break all the girls had to line up in the playground before marching into the school in two's and Miss McBain decided to get us all in Alpha order and asked us all to go to our own places then she told all the girls who had moved to line-up in the shed and she belted them. All my memory tells me there was hundreds but it probably was about 50 and I truly hope she had a very sore arm.

Barbara Ann Scadden - 1967

Mrs Bates, well what can I say, strap happy she was.

Marion McDonald - 1970

Miss Mabel Irving - She was the first teacher to give me the belt at the Finnart. The first - but not the last!

Friern Barnet County, London

Janice Blight - 1962

Miss Kind/Mr Beeston - I remember Miss Kind - she gave me the cane once for something I had not done but was caught up in someone else's prank! Unfortunately, Miss Kind knew my Mum and I was terrified she would tell her (she never did)...Mr Beeston was our shorthand & typing teacher. He was great and we learnt easily from him. To this day I still use my skills. I remember the school flat at Bounds Green. Strictly run I think. Those were the days.

Frenchwood County, Preston

Geraldine Stewart - 1963

Miss Ada Blackhurst - Accolades to Miss Blackhurst what a lovely human being...took our class for Scripture and Music. Miss Robinson...History and my form teacher and the only teacher who ever gave me the cane.
